The types of peat that are used for agriculture are:
- White peat: The surface peat produced from the top layer of a peat field is generally called white peat. Typical characteristics of white peat are a low dry bulk weight and a high level of humidity
- Transition peat: Transition peat is extracted from the transition layer between white and black peat. Its properties are also between those of white and black peat. Because it is less dens it is often preferred above black peat as an ingredient of consumer multi purpose compost
The main forms in which peat is supplied in agriculture are:
- Mild peat: This is untreated, uncompressed peat that can be supplied as loose bulk or in big bales or bags. It can be used as compost for agricultural or horticultural land. There are different grades of fractions that vary from 0-4mm to 20-40 mm
- Sod peat: Slices of peat that are cut by hand or machine and dried in the air
- Peat pellets: Peat pellets are dehydrated and compressed peat grains in various forms and sizes. Pellets are made from coarsely crushed peat moss with nutrients added. By adding water the pellet expands to form a pot as well as the soil
- Substrates: This is peat used as a nutrient for plants in the form of potting compost. The Compeat Company delivers six sorts of this compost, each sort intended for the growth of different kinds of flowers and plants. The six sorts are: Terra blossoming, Terra leaves deco, Terra succulent, Terra palm, Terra universal, Terra grass & trees
